Lean production originated from the Toyota Production System in Japan. It is a production management philosophy developed and evolved from that foundation, hence Lean production is not equivalent to the Toyota Production System. For instance, although Lean production inherits the zero-inventory model from the Toyota Production System, it is not zero inventory in the truest sense.
